The Anambra State Government has approved contracts worth about ₦604 million for road and infrastructure projects aimed at improving public services, strengthening security, and supporting economic growth across the state.

The approvals were made during the second meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) in 2026, held at the Government House, known as the “Light House,” in Awka, the state capital.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor who made this known in a statement, said that the council also approved key activities to mark the inauguration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim for a second term in office, following Soludo’s re-election in the November 8, 2025, governorship election.

Three major events have been scheduled for the inauguration: an interdenominational service will be held on March 15, the swearing-in ceremony will take place on March 17, and a thanksgiving service is scheduled for March 22.

The council also established several subcommittees to coordinate and ensure the smooth organisation of the events.

Among the infrastructure approvals, the council authorised the release of ₦164.4 million to cover cost adjustments for the construction of an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standard five-lane track and natural grass pitch at the Ekwulobia Stadium Complex.

Another ₦72.6 million was approved for road marking and the installation of thermoplastic speed bumps along the 10.043-kilometre Afor Nkpor–Eke Obosi Road.

The council also approved ₦121.9 million for the supply and installation of 10 converted 40-foot containers to serve as temporary accommodation for security personnel at various locations across the state.

In addition, ₦172.2 million was approved for the construction of asphalt surfaces on the internal dual carriage driveway at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Awka, while ₦175.4 million was allocated for asphalt surfacing of the service lane leading to the State House of Assembly and the High Court Complex in the state capital.

The council also reviewed developments related to the enforcement of law and order in the state, including the demolition of an illegal shrine linked to criminal activities as part of broader efforts to promote social stability and uphold community values.

In a related decision, ANSEC announced that the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka will now be reserved exclusively for official government functions. Private events previously hosted at the venue will instead be directed to the Multipurpose Arena of the Awka Township Stadium.

The latest approvals follow earlier decisions by the state government to award contracts valued at about ₦16.7 billion for road, electricity, and other infrastructure projects designed to promote development and improve living conditions in Anambra state.

Authorities say the projects form part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure, enhance security coordination, and support sustainable development across the state.
