The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries worldwide to increase investment in science and innovation to address persistent health challenges and advance universal health coverage.

Speaking at the 2026 World Health Day, in Awka Anambra State, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, emphasised that evidence-based policies and resilient health systems are critical to ensuring that proven interventions reach all populations.

He said Africa’s renewed health agenda must prioritise equity, strengthen preparedness for emerging threats, and invest in scientific research and innovation.

Partnerships

Mr Janabi highlighted the importance of partnerships between governments, development organisations, and communities in driving sustainable improvements in health outcomes.

The global theme, “Together for Health, Stand with Science,” underscores the central role of science in preventing, detecting, and responding to health crises, including pandemics, infectious diseases, and maternal and child health challenges.

Representing the Regional Director, Anambra State WHO Coordinator, Mohammed Bonos, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting state and national governments in evidence-based healthcare delivery, strengthening disease surveillance, and expanding access to interventions that save lives, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Obiageli Uchebo, said the state government was advancing healthcare through strategic investments and evidence-driven policies.

She noted that primary healthcare services have been strengthened across all local government areas, disease surveillance systems improved, and interventions targeting tuberculosis and HIV scaled up.

Uchebo added that Nigeria continues to face high burdens of malaria, tuberculosis, and maternal mortality, underscoring the need for sustained investment and coordinated action.

Other officials at the briefing included the State Director of Medical Services, Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, and the Director of Public Health, Afam Aneme.

World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, raises awareness of global health priorities and mobilises action to improve health outcomes worldwide.
