The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso, has described the power of the media as a vital tool for promoting human progress, peaceful coexistence and development in society.

Archbishop Ndagoso made the remark during a courtesy visit to the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, in Abuja.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 Communications Week (ComWEEK), the CBCN President emphasised the importance of promoting media literacy across the Church.

He revealed that Church authorities in Rome were impressed to learn that Nigeria pioneered the grassroots media literacy initiative within the global Catholic community.

Reflecting on the recent Ad Limina visit to the Vatican, Archbishop Ndagoso noted that the President of the Dicastery for Communication commended the Nigerian Church for introducing the initiative, describing it as a significant step for the universal Church.

Drawing a historical parallel, the Archbishop highlighted the strategic role of communication in evangelism.

He recalled how Saint Peter moved from Jerusalem to Rome to take advantage of the advanced communication networks of the Roman Empire in spreading the Gospel, stressing that the modern Church must adopt similar strategies.

As the Catholic Church in Nigeria prepares for the fifth edition of ComWEEK, he called on priests and leaders of ecclesial institutions to give full support to the initiative.

According to him, understanding new media platforms is essential for effectively communicating the Gospel to the present generation.

“Everyone must support the success of ComWEEK because it is certainly the way to go. We have no other option but to train ourselves in the effective use of modern communication tools,” he said.

“The Gospel must be communicated. We must understand the culture and mindset of the generation we are dealing with and engage these tools to reach them. It is easy to start a good initiative, but sustaining it remains the real challenge.”

Archbishop Ndagoso concluded the visit by expressing appreciation to the Secretary General and staff of the Secretariat for their dedication, encouraging them to remain committed as the Church prepares for the upcoming national Communications Week.
