Good governance has been described as the panacea for overcoming challenges facing public service in Nigeria.
The Minister of State, Finance, Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba said this in Abuja at the 7th induction ceremony for inaugurated Chief Executives Officers, Chairmen and Members of Governing Boards of Federal Parastatals and Commission.
According to Agba, running a Government is a team sport which requires all members to understand its role and what constitutes effective governance.
” I have seen organisations fail because of problems at the governance level. Effective governance,in contrast greatly assists the organisation by being focused, synergistic, efficient and allowing a respectful resolution of a conflict if ideas,” the Minister said.
He said; “The ability to achieve this is by building capacities of those who lead the process of designing and implementing appropriate policies of government.
” All these are geared towards attaining national development in terms of infrastructure and the attainment of peace and political stability.”
Agba further stated that following the end of the Economic and Recovery Growth Plan of the Nigerian Government, the Ministry has made the ongoing plan participatory by involving not only States, but the organised Private sector, the Civil Society Organisations, women and youth groups including Persons With special needs.
” The plans are anchored on the Government’s desire to address the prevalence of poverty by lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within 10years,” the Minister noted.
He emphasised that the plan would also put in place strategies to tackle Nigeria’s increasing population growth which has been predicted to hit the 411 million mark and become the third populous country in the world by 2050, after China and India.
Agba added that the plans would ensure economic stability, national development and good governance.
The event was organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Drifting office.
