Rivers State Seeks Media Partnership for Education Reform

By Iquo Williams, Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Government in South-South Nigeria has called on media practitioners to support government initiatives aimed at reforming the state’s education sector.

The State Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, appealed while addressing education correspondents led by Amadi Akujobi in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

According to the Commissioner, the Ministry of Education cannot effectively showcase its achievements without a strong partnership with the media.

He stressed that adequate publicity would help residents become aware of ongoing reforms and successes recorded in the sector.

Teachers Recruitment

Dr. Nwagor stated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved the employment of 1,000 teachers.

He said  the orientation programme for the newly recruited teachers was currently underway.

Dr. Nwagor further revealed that the recruitment of an additional 5,000 teachers is also in progress and is expected to be concluded within the next three to four weeks.

“We need every one of you to be supportive by publicising education programmes in the state. People may not be aware of what is happening unless it is made public,” he said.

The Commissioner noted that the ongoing recruitment drive would address the shortage of teachers in public schools and improve learning activities across the state.

“We are going to have sufficient teachers that will be able to carry out learning activities effectively. We will not be having shortage of teachers anymore. That is one of the achievements of His Excellency,” Dr. Nwagor stated.

He urged journalists and media organisations to partner with the Ministry of Education in highlighting the achievements of the present administration, insisting that the government cannot succeed without media collaboration.
