The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned its Presidential ticket for the 2027 General election to Southern Nigeria as part of efforts to promote equity, inclusion and national balance within the party.
The party made the resolution at its inaugural national convention in Abuja as it intensifies preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
The convention, held on Saturday, brought together party leaders, delegates and supporters from across the Country to deliberate on the Party’s future direction and elect members of its National Executive Committee (NEC).

The gathering comes amid a wave of defections into the party, including the recent arrival of prominent opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, developments that have further heightened political realignments ahead of the next presidential election.
The convention also agreed on a consensus arrangement for members of the party’s Federal Executive Committee, while members of the Working Committee were returned elected to continue managing the affairs of the party.
Political observers say “the decisions reached at the convention may shape emerging alliances and intensify consultations among aspirants from the South-West, South-East, and South-South regions seeking the party’s presidential ticket.”
Political observers also believe that the move reflects ongoing debates around fairness, power rotation, and inclusive governance in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Analysts say zoning the ticket to the South may help the party attract broader national support and strengthen its internal cohesion.

The issue of power shift between the North and South has remained a major factor in the country’s political landscape since the return to democratic rule in 1999.The convention further featured discussions on party reforms, grassroots mobilisation, youth inclusion, and strategies to position the NDC as a strong democratic alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
