The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council will commence its 2026 Press Week from Saturday, 16 May to Friday, 22 May 2026, with a series of activities focused on responsible journalism, healthy living and democratic accountability.
The annual Press Week is one of the Council’s flagship events, bringing together journalists, policymakers, civil society organisations, media stakeholders and government officials to discuss issues critical to Nigeria’s democracy and national development.
This year’s theme is: “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation.”
The week-long programme aims to highlight the media’s crucial role in combating misinformation and protecting the integrity of electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Activities lined up for the 2026 Press Week include:

The highlight of the week will be the Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, expected to attract more than 1,000 participants.
The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Bago, is expected to chair the lecture, while former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, will serve as Co-Chairman.
Other dignitaries expected at the event include the Inspector-General of Police, key political figures, media executives and stakeholders from various sectors.
Former member of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu, is expected to deliver the keynote address.
The lecture and awards ceremony will also recognise outstanding journalists and distinguished Nigerians for their excellence, professionalism and contributions to national development.
As part of its community-focused initiatives, the Council is partnering with Nizamiye Hospital to organise a medical outreach offering free health checks and consultations for journalists and members of the public.
The NUJ FCT Council has called on journalists, stakeholders and the public to participate actively in the week-long activities aimed at promoting ethical journalism, democratic values and national unity.
Speaking ahead of the event, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, urged members to participate fully in all activities, describing the 2026 Press Week as “a week of impact, reflection, celebration and professional excellence”.
The Council assured participants of a memorable and engaging experience throughout the celebration.
