Fuel Price: Kenyan Transport Operators Suspend Nationwide Strike

Kenya’s public transport operators have called off a nationwide strike after talks with President William Ruto over rising fuel prices.

The strike, which disrupted transport services on Monday and Tuesday, sparked violent protests across the country. At least four people were killed and more than 30 others injured after police reportedly fired live ammunition at demonstrators.

Following a meeting with transport operators on Friday, the government pledged to reduce diesel prices during the next monthly fuel price review scheduled for June. In response, operators announced they would not resume the strike.

President Ruto dismissed proposals to cut fuel taxes further, saying the earlier reduction of fuel VAT from 16% to 8% had already led to major revenue losses and that additional cuts could affect government service delivery.

Earlier this week, protesters blocked highways, burned tyres and prevented private vehicles from accessing roads, forcing many businesses and schools to shut down after initial negotiations failed.
