Italy Seeks Deeper Economic Partnership With Nigeria

Italy has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Nigeria, expressing optimism that the resolution of the long-running ENI dispute will encourage increased Italian investment in the country.

Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Roberto Mengoni, stated this during Italy’s 80th National Day celebration in Abuja.

Mengoni highlighted the contributions of Italian companies to Nigeria’s development in infrastructure, energy and construction since the 1930s, stressing that Italy remained committed to supporting Nigeria’s democratic governance, security and economic growth.

The Ambassador said the settlement of the ENI dispute was expected to create fresh opportunities for investment and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.

He also pointed to growing collaboration between Nigeria and Italy, citing engagements between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as plans for both countries to co-chair a major Global Partnership for Education conference later this year.

Mengoni said the expanding partnership reflected the strong and evolving relationship between the two nations.

The event also marked Italy’s 80th National Day and celebrated the achievements of Italian women since 1946.

The ambassador acknowledged progress in gender equality over the decades but noted that challenges, including unequal pay, underrepresentation in leadership positions and violence against women, remained areas requiring continued attention.
