Nigeria Assumes Presidency of Global Disarmament Conference

By Margaret Ebeshi

Nigeria has formally assumed the Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament (CD), reinforcing its commitment to international peace, security, and multilateral diplomacy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Nigeria’s assumption of the leadership of the Conference provides the country with a strategic platform to contribute to global disarmament efforts and strengthen international cooperation on security issues.

As part of its presidency, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has approved two key thematic priorities that will guide Nigeria’s leadership of the conference.

The priority focuses on strengthening international arrangements that protect non-nuclear-weapon states against the use or threat of nuclear weapons, commonly referred to as Negative Security Assurances.

According to the Ministry, the theme reflects Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to nuclear disarmament, global peace, and the protection of countries that do not possess nuclear weapons.

The initiative also aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy objective of promoting a rules-based international order and supports the Democracy pillar of the government’s 4D foreign policy framework by advocating equal security and justice for all nations.

The second priority centres on improving the effectiveness and functioning of the Conference on Disarmament itself.

Nigeria intends to promote reforms aimed at revitalising the world’s sole multilateral forum dedicated to negotiating disarmament agreements.

The Ministry noted that strengthening the relevance and responsiveness of the Conference would enhance global efforts to address emerging security challenges while fostering greater international cooperation.

The theme supports the development and demography pillars of Nigeria’s foreign policy, recognising the link between effective disarmament mechanisms, global stability, and sustainable development.

Nigeria expressed its readiness to work closely with member states throughout its presidency, emphasising dialogue, cooperation, and consensus-building as essential tools for advancing the conference’s objectives.

The assumption of the Conference on Disarmament presidency underscores Nigeria’s growing role in international diplomacy and its continued advocacy for a safer, more secure world free from the threat of nuclear conflict.

Through its leadership, Nigeria aims to contribute meaningfully to efforts to strengthen global peace, enhance collective security, and advance multilateral solutions to contemporary challenges.
