Speaking at the event, HRFN National Coordinator, Mustapha Bida, said the derby was part of efforts to revive and promote horse racing in Nigeria. Bida noted that Zaria occupies a prominent place in the history of horse racing in the country.

He recalled that the Mohammed Aminu Square racecourse was established during the colonial era. According to him, horse racing in Zaria had been dormant for about 14 years before efforts were made to revive it.

“We organised a similar event last year after a 14-year break, and we are continuing with it this year. That makes this event very significant,” he said.

The coordinator explained that the theme reflected the support and encouragement the federation had received under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He described the turnout as impressive, noting that the derby attracted horse owners, riders, and enthusiasts from several West and Central African countries, including Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso.

Bida expressed optimism that the annual competition would further strengthen cultural ties, boost tourism, and restore Zaria’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading horse racing centres.

The event featured presentation of medals and prizes to the winners.
