The Nigerian Government has secured the release of six Nigerian nationals who had been detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerians regained their freedom following sustained diplomatic and consular efforts by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan in collaboration with the Ivorian authorities.

Four of the detainees were released on 22 June, while the remaining two regained their freedom the following day.

The Ministry commended Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwabiola Ezenwa, and the Embassy staff for their professionalism and tireless efforts  in securing the release of the detained Nigerians.

It stated that the Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detainees, ensured their welfare throughout their detention, and engaged consistently with the Ivorian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, as well as other relevant institutions, to facilitate their release.

The Ministry also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, describing the successful outcome as a reflection of the cordial bilateral relations between the two countries, founded on mutual respect, friendship and regional solidarity.

Reaffirming the Nigerian Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, the Ministry said “it would continue to provide consular assistance and engage with host governments through diplomatic channels to safeguard the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerian citizens wherever they reside.”

The Ministry further advised Nigerians living or travelling abroad to respect the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic or consular mission to facilitate assistance whenever necessary.
