Army Commissions Accommodation Blocks for Troops in Port Harcourt

The Nigerian Army has expanded its Soldier-First welfare programme with the commissioning of new accommodation blocks for personnel in Port Harcourt.

The initiative  reinforces the Army’s commitment to improving the welfare of troops as a key pillar of a more professional, resilient and operationally effective force.

This was highlighted on Friday when the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commissioned the newly completed accommodation blocks at the Headquarters of 6 Division.

He described quality housing as a strategic investment in personnel morale, operational readiness and institutional efficiency.

According to a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army leadership believes that providing decent, secure and conducive living conditions for personnel and their families directly enhances combat effectiveness by keeping soldiers motivated and better prepared to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity against evolving security threats.

The statement noted that the project also reflects the Army’s broader Soldier-First philosophy, under which personnel welfare is increasingly regarded as an operational capability rather than merely an administrative responsibility.

The Army leadership further stressed that sustained investment in accommodation and other welfare initiatives remains essential to building a professional force capable of responding effectively to Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

Lieutenant General Shaibu also acknowledged the continued support of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that government investment in personnel welfare has strengthened operational effectiveness while enhancing the Nigerian Army’s capacity to deliver on its constitutional mandate.

The accommodation project marks another phase of the Army’s ongoing nationwide welfare initiatives aimed at improving living standards, boosting personnel morale and sustaining long-term operational readiness across its formations.
