Electricity Company Begins Gbarain Power Plant Rehabilitation in Bayelsa

Chioma Eche, Abuja

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), has commenced the rehabilitation of the 225-megawatt (MW) Gbarain Power Plant in Bayelsa State, southern Nigeria

The Company handed over the project to a joint venture between TILT Energy Limited and Schneider Electric, to replace the plant’s burnt Power Control Module (PCM).

The Module was destroyed by fire in November 2020, just months before the power plant was due for commissioning, delaying the delivery of an additional 225MW of electricity to Nigeria’s national grid.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on July 9, 2026, NDPHC’s General Manager, Generation Projects, Ginsau Idris said the replacement of the extensively damaged PCM is essential to restoring the facility and expressed confidence that the contractors would complete the work within schedule.

The Executive Director, Generation,  Abdullahi Kassim described the fire incident as a major setback but noted that complementary infrastructure, including access roads and support buildings are already under construction.

He added that the plant is strategically located close to gas supply, making it well-positioned for efficient operations once completed.

Managing Director of TILT Energy Limited, Mr. Deji Awodeji, assured stakeholders that “the rehabilitation would be completed within, or even ahead of the 12-month timeline, while maintaining high-quality standards.”

NDPHC’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Adighije said the Gbarain Power Plant was prioritised because it is a “low-hanging fruit” capable of delivering a quick boost to electricity generation.

She explained that the company secured the necessary approvals and funding in record time to fast-track the project.

According to her, restoring the 225MW plant will strengthen electricity supply, improve grid reliability and support the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The ceremony ended with an inspection of ongoing works at the project site by NDPHC management, contractors and other stakeholders.
