Nigeria’s men’s volleyball team defeated Niger Republic 3-1 in their opening match of the 2026 African Nations Cup Zone 3 Qualifiers in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria started confidently, edging the opening set 25-22 to seize an early advantage in the encounter. Niger Republic responded strongly in the second set, fighting back to record a narrow 25-23 victory and level the contest.
Coach Taiwo Oladipupo’s side regained momentum in the third set, winning another closely contested battle 25-23 to move ahead again. Nigeria then dominated the fourth set completely, overwhelming Niger Republic 25-9 to seal an impressive opening victory.

The win gives Nigeria an encouraging start in the regional qualifiers as the team pursues qualification for the 2026 African Nations Cup.
Speaking afterwards, coach Oladipupo expressed delight with his team’s performance and positive start to the competition.

“I am very happy with the result. It is our first match and first win of the tournament. I am happy,” he said.
The coach praised his players’ resilience after surrendering the second set before responding strongly to finish the match convincingly.
Looking ahead, Oladipupo said his players were fully prepared for Wednesday’s clash against tournament hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
“We are ready to face any team. We will go all out to get another three points,” he said.
The 2026 African Nations Cup Zone 3 Qualifiers are taking place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from July 13th – 19th.
