The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has called for the suspension of academic activities in tertiary institutions across the Osun until after the Governorship election.
The NANS Southwest (Zone D) Coordinator, Mr Kayode Adeyemo while addressing the journalists on Friday said the call was a precautionary measure to protect students’ lives.
Adeyemo noted that host communities where tertiary institutions are located have recently witnessed rising political tension and incidents of violence, necessitating proactive steps to ensure student safety.
He called on the authorities of all tertiary institutions in the State to temporarily shut down until a more stable security environment is restored.
“This recommendation is neither political nor partisan. It is not intended to interfere with the statutory powers of institutional authorities or government. Rather, it is a precautionary measure made solely in the interest of protecting lives.
“Academic calendars can be reviewed. Lectures can be rescheduled. Examinations can be postponed. But the life of a student cannot be replaced. We would rather take preventive action today than mourn avoidable losses tomorrow,” he said.
Adeyemo said the association had communicated its concerns to relevant authorities responsible for security, public order and administration of tertiary institutions.
“Our objective has never been confrontation; it is to ensure that every student in Osun is adequately protected throughout the election period,” he said.
He called on the State government, security agencies and managements of the tertiary institutions to engage with NANS within seven days on the concerns raised, and measures required to safeguard students before, during and after the election.
Adeyemo warned that “failure to close the institutions within a week will lead to democratic actions to protect students’ lives, welfare and constitutional rights.”
Appeal to politicians and police
While appealing to political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully without violence, he also urged the security agencies to carry out their duties with professionalism, impartiality and respect for citizens’ rights.
“Our position is clear. We are non-partisan. We stand only for the safety, welfare and future of Nigerian students.
“No election is worth the life of a single student,” he said.
The Zonal Coordinator however urged students to remain peaceful, vigilant and law-abiding even as he urged them not to allow themselves to be used for violence or unlawful activities.
