The son of the late human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, Saheed Fawehinmi has called on Nigerians to continue to observe the necessary health precautionary measures to avoid being infected by the deadly disease, COVID-19.
Mr. Fawehinmi who made the call in Lagos during a press conference the family organised to confirm the actual cause of his elder brother’s death, Muhammed Fawehinmi said that his brother died of complications from Covid-19.
Mr. Fawehinmi who described his brother as a pillar and everything to the family said that COVID-19 is real and must not be taken for a joke.
He urged Nigerians to start adhering strictly to the laid down COVID-19 preventive measures by regularly wearing their masks, observing regular washing of hands, maintaining social distancing and staying home when there is no reason to go out in order to get themselves protected from the deadly disease.
“Today, however, we are in a position to inform you that our dear brother died from COVID-19 related complications. Arising from this, we want to use this opportunity to urge all Nigerians to take necessary precautions to avoid being infected by the deadly disease by correctly wearing face masks, regularly sanitizing and washing their hands with soap and maintaining social distancing amidst crowds,” he said.
Mr. Fawehinmi who also stated that his late brother, Mohammed, was not vaccinated against COVID-19 disease urged the citizens to avail themselves the opportunity of taking covid-19 Vaccines for their health sake and called on the government to step up its public enlightenment on the deadly disease so that many more Nigerians will take the safety measures seriously alongside taking the required doses of Covid-19 vaccines.
”Nigerians should try to get this vaccine. It is better to tread the path of caution because if my brother Mohammed had taken the vaccine, maybe he would have still been alive today,” he stated.
Pouring their tributes, the Executive Director International Press Center, Lanre Arogundade and Dr. Okon Akiba described the late Muhammed Fawehinmi as a man of courage who despite his condition travelled wide to represent his family in functions saying that the family has lost a pillar.
Mohammed, 52, died on Wednesday, August 11th in a Lagos hospital after complaining of having difficulties in breathing.
His burial arrangements according to the family will start with a service of songs and the night of tributes on Wednesday, August 25 at the Archbishop Vining Cathedral in Ikeja Lagos while his remains would be interred at the Gani Fawehinmi family compound in Ondo, Western Nigeria after a brief funeral service on Friday, August 27, 2021.
