Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to the successful delivery of the ₦1.05 trillion Kano light rail project following a meeting with a Federal Government delegation and project contractors ahead of the official groundbreaking ceremony.
The delegation, comprising officials of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and representatives of Mota-Engil Nigeria, met with the governor in Abuja to brief him on preparations for the commencement of the landmark transport project.
According to a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the delegation was led by the Managing Director of MOFI, Dr Armstrong Ume Takang, alongside the Chairman of Mota-Engil Nigeria, Kola Karim.

The rail project, recently approved by President Bola Tinubu at a contract value of ₦1.05 trillion, is expected to transform urban transportation in Kano by improving connectivity, reducing traffic congestion, and boosting economic activities across the state.
Governor Yusuf assured the delegation of his full cooperation with the Federal Government and the contractors to ensure timely and successful execution of the project.
He described the rail initiative as a transformative investment that will reinforce Kano’s status as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria, while providing residents with a modern, safe, reliable, and efficient mass transit system.
The Governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the project, describing it as a major milestone in the state’s infrastructure development.
The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to mark the commencement of one of Nigeria’s most ambitious urban rail infrastructure projects, aimed at enhancing mobility and driving sustainable economic growth in Kano State.
