Gombe Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has met with the Minister of Livestock Development, Mukhtar Idi Maiha, in Abuja, to advance collaboration between Gombe State and the Federal Government on the implementation of Nigeria’s livestock development agenda.
The meeting focused on strengthening partnerships to accelerate ongoing livestock sector reforms, attract investment, and enhance value chain development in line with the Federal Government’s livestock transformation programme.
Governor Yahaya reaffirmed Gombe State’s commitment to supporting the national livestock development initiative, highlighting the state’s deliberate policy measures and investments aimed at positioning it as a leading hub for livestock production, processing and marketing.
He briefed the minister on the establishment of the Gombe State Ministry of Livestock Development, created to coordinate reforms, facilitate investment and drive sustainable growth across the sector.
The governor also highlighted progress on the state’s 184-hectare livestock and agro-industrial hub being developed under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.
He said the facility will integrate livestock production, processing, agribusiness and commerce to strengthen the livestock value chain.
According to him, the hub will feature a modern abattoir with a daily processing capacity of 500 cattle, over 2,000 sheep and goats, and more than 10,000 poultry birds.
Other components include an International Livestock Market, an International Grains and Animal Feed Market, a Modern Timber Market, an Inland Dry Port, a veterinary hospital, a leather processing complex, and a waste-to-energy and organic fertiliser plant.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya noted that the project is expected to generate thousands of jobs, attract local and foreign investment, improve market access, reduce post-harvest losses and boost the livelihoods of livestock producers and agribusiness operators.
He described the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Tinubu as a strategic reform capable of transforming Nigeria’s livestock industry.
He reaffirmed Gombe State’s readiness to work closely with the ministry, development partners and private investors to deliver sustainable, investment-driven growth in the sector.
The governor was accompanied to the meeting by the Gombe State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mr Salihu Baba Alkali.
