Team Nigeria celebrated another memorable day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as Goodness Nwachukwu shattered the discus throw world record to win gold.
Nwachukwu produced the performance of her career in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus throw, saving her biggest throw for the final round.
She delivered with a sensational 39.66m effort to break her own F42 world record by more than three metres and secure the Commonwealth Games title.
Her record-breaking throw saw her finish ahead of Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye (38.52m), who claimed silver, while fellow Welsh athlete Bree Cronin took bronze with 36.00m.
Ezekiel Nathaniel
Team Nigeria athlete Ezekiel Nathaniel stormed to Gold in the men’s 400m Hurdles, clocking 48.47s to secure Nigeria’s 9th Gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
His victory saw him become the first Nigerian man to win Commonwealth Games Gold in the event. Nathaniel is also the first Nigerian athlete to win a medal in the 400m Hurdles in 16years since Ajoke Odumosu at the New Delhi Games.
Jessica Oji
Nigeria’s medal haul continued to grow as 19-year-old Jessica Oji announced herself on the international stage with a superb silver medal in the women’s shot put.
Competing in her first major championship for Nigeria, Oji recorded a best throw of 17.87m to finish second.
In boxing, Blessing Orakwe’s campaign in the women’s 70kg event came to an end after a closely contested quarterfinal against Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti.
Orakwe lost by a narrow 3-2 split decision after winning two of the five judges’ scorecards, bringing to a close a spirited performance for Team Nigeria.
With more finals still to come across different events, Team Nigeria continues to build on an impressive campaign in Glasgow, delivering medals, records and performances that have reinforced the country’s standing among the Commonwealth’s sporting elite.
