As the curtain gradually fell on the athletics programme in Glasgow, Team Nigeria ensured it did so in unforgettable fashion, delivering another medal-laden day that blended golden moments with stirring performances across the track and field.
Samuel Ogazi (Men’s 400m)
Athlete Samuel Ogazi made history by becoming the first Nigerian man to win the 400m title, after charging to a commanding run of 44.25s, just 0.01 shy off Kirani James Games Record.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards, claimed silver in 44.82s, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene took bronze in 45.21s. His compatriot Edidiong Udo finished 8th.
Ella Onojuvwevwo (Women’s 400m)
Nigeria added another medal in the quarter mile department with Ella Onojuvwevwo claiming bronze in the women’s division after clocking 51.00s in the final.
Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley won gold in 50.21s, while Barbados’ Sada Williams secured silver in 50.99s.
Ruth Usoro (Women’s Long Jump)
There was further success in the field as Ruth Usoro claimed silver in the women’s long jump, securing her first ever international medal.
The Nigerian produced a wind-assisted leap of 6.87m on her very first attempt to finish second, improving significantly on her sixth-place finish at the previous Commonwealth Games.
England’s Jazmin Sawyers won gold with a best jump of 6.93m.
Men’s 4x100m Relay
There was more success on the track as Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team claimed a brilliant Bronze medal.
The quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike combined to run a season’s best of 38.12s, finishing third in a thrilling final.
Australia secured the gold medal in 38.07s, while Canada crossed the line in silver medal position in 38.11s.
Women’s 4x100m relay
In the women’s 4x100m relay, the Nigerian quartet of Miracle Ezechukwu, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Olayinka Olajide and Prestina Ochonogor finished sixth in 43.74s.
Jamaica claimed gold in 42.65s, with Canada taking silver in 42.76s.
Mixed 4x400m Relay
Team Nigeria rounded off its athletics programme with another podium finish as Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo combined to win bronze in the inaugural mixed 4x400m relay.
The quartet clocked a season’s best of 3:12.85 to finish third behind Jamaica and England, bringing Nigeria’s athletics campaign in Glasgow to a memorable close.
Enku Ekuta (Judo)
Nigeria also celebrated success in judo, where Enku Ekuta secured the bronze medal in the women’s -63kg event.
Ekuta responded impressively after a quarterfinal defeat, battling through the repechage before defeating Zambia’s Rita Kabinda by ippon in the bronze medal contest, wrapping up victory in under three minutes to add another medal to Team Nigeria’s tally.
So far, Team Nigeria sits 6th on the medals table with 24 (10 Gold, 7 Silver and 7 Bronze). The country’s 10 Gold medals have come from athletics (4) weightlifting (3) and powerlifting (3).
Nigeria has had an impressive outing in Glasgow, leading the African charge as the only African nation currently ranked among the top 10 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
