Sen. Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, has advocated the establishment of a Solid Minerals Development Commission to regulate the mining sector, unlock its economic potential, and curb insecurity linked to illegal mining.

Sen. Onawo said he sponsored the Mining Rangers Bill, which has passed its third reading in the Senate and currently awaits concurrence in the House of Representatives noting that the initiative would also create jobs and boost Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

According to the lawmaker, establishing dedicated mining rangers is crucial because criminal activities remain deeply intertwined with illegal mining operations.

Highlighting one of his constituency achievements, the lawmaker said he attracted key projects to his district, one of which is the siting of the Zonal Headquarters of the National Examinations Council.

Onawo also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be well prepared ahead of the 2027 election.
