Sixteen kidnap victims have been rescued in Kogi State after a Nigerian Army-led joint security operation tracked their abductors across local government boundaries.
The operation forced the criminals to abandon their captives during a firefight near Adumu Community in Dekina Local Government Area.
The rescue followed the abduction of commuters on Sunday, 9 August, along the Ojuwo-Ajengo-Memarebo and Ojiwo-Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area.
Credible intelligence indicating that the victims had been moved towards Adumu triggered an immediate search operation involving troops of 21 Battalion and personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship Lugard, alongside the Nigeria Police Force, local vigilantes and hunters.

The Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed the development in a statement on behalf of the Nigerian Army, highlighting the joint character of the operation and the role of intelligence in directing the rescue effort.
The security team eventually made contact with the fleeing kidnappers and engaged them in a firefight. Outmatched by the combined response, the criminals abandoned all 16 captives and escaped into the surrounding forest, with some reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds.
The rescued group comprised six adult males, six adult females and four children. They are undergoing documentation and medical assessment before being reunited with their families, bringing the operation to a successful conclusion from the perspective of the immediate rescue objective.
The operation, however, came at a cost. One local hunter participating in the rescue effort was killed during the encounter, while a police officer sustained injuries and is receiving medical treatment. Their involvement highlights the increasingly important role of locally embedded security actors in extending the reach of formal security forces during difficult terrain and community-level operations.
The Kogi operation also demonstrates the value of combining military capability with local intelligence and the presence of other security agencies. Rather than relying on a single force to track the abductors, the operation brought together the Army, Navy, Police and community-based security actors, creating a coordinated response capable of pursuing the victims beyond the initial abduction location.
The successful recovery of all 16 victims reinforces the importance of rapid intelligence exploitation in kidnapping incidents, particularly where abductors attempt to move victims away from the original attack location and into forested areas.
The Nigerian Army commended the public for providing timely information and urged citizens to maintain cooperation with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities. Such information, the Army noted, remains essential to disrupting kidnapping networks and denying criminal groups freedom of action.
