The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has challenged journalists and media organisations across the country to prioritise national security, professionalism and public interest in their coverage of terrorism, banditry, insurgency and other security threats.
The call was contained in resolutions reached at the Union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Dutse, Jigawa State, where national officers, state council chairmen and secretaries deliberated on the safety, welfare and professional development of journalists.
The NUJ cautioned media practitioners against sensational reporting, glorification of terrorists and other criminal elements, as well as excessive publicity that could inadvertently amplify propaganda, aid recruitment or enhance the public profile of criminal groups.
It, however, stressed that the call for responsible reporting must not undermine journalists’ professional duty, urging practitioners to maintain accuracy, balance, fairness and credibility while taking national security and the safety of media workers into consideration.

In response to persistent insecurity, particularly across the northern region, the NEC endorsed the proposed Northern States Security Summit to be hosted by Zamfara State.
The summit is expected to bring together governments, security agencies, media stakeholders and other relevant actors to develop practical and sustainable strategies for tackling insecurity and improving the protection of journalists, media organisations and communities.
The NUJ also commended security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), for their cooperation and support towards enhancing the safety of journalists, while urging them to further strengthen their partnership with the media.
Welfare
On the welfare and working conditions of journalists, the Union commended the Bauchi State Government for approving and releasing more than N400 million for the comprehensive renovation of the NUJ Secretariat in the state.
It called on other state governments to emulate the gesture by providing conducive working environments and improved facilities for journalists.
The NEC further resolved to expand partnerships with state and local governments, development organisations, professional bodies and other stakeholders to advance journalism, improve journalists’ welfare and strengthen media institutions.
Legal Protection
To enhance legal protection for journalists, the council approved a proposed partnership with a reputable law firm to provide legal representation, advisory services and other forms of legal support to the NUJ and its members, particularly in litigation involving the Union.
The council also appreciated UN Women for its continued partnership with the NUJ, especially in building the capacity of women journalists, and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusion, professional opportunities and career advancement for women in the media industry.
In another area of national development, the NUJ commended the Jigawa State Government for its commitment to mechanised agriculture and urged journalists to give increased attention to food security, agricultural productivity, rural development and policies capable of driving sustainable economic growth.
The Union urged all members to abide by its constitution and use established internal mechanisms to resolve disputes, stressing that unity, integrity and institutional stability remain critical to the growth of the organisation.
The NEC also resolved to organise two additional national events before the end of 2026 to promote professional development, knowledge sharing, networking, institutional unity and members’ welfare.
