Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen community protection, counter violent crime and promote professional policing at the second United States-Nigeria Country of Particular Concern (CPC) Joint Working Group meeting.
The meeting, held on August 12, 2026, in Washington, D.C., reviewed Nigeria’s progress under the Joint Working Group Roadmap for the April-to-June 2026 reporting period and explored opportunities for deeper security cooperation between the two countries.

IGP Disu represented the Nigeria Police Force as part of a high-level Nigerian delegation led by the National Security Adviser and comprising the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Defence, service chiefs, and heads of other security and law enforcement agencies.

In his presentation, the IGP outlined the police contribution to the implementation of the roadmap, including sustained counter-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations, increased police presence in vulnerable communities and the deployment of early-warning mechanisms.
He also highlighted measures aimed at protecting internally displaced persons and supporting their safe return to their communities.
According to him, personnel from specialised police formations were deployed to vulnerable Local Government Areas during the reporting period to reinforce public safety and deter violent extremist and criminal groups.
The IGP also disclosed that the recruitment of 50,000 police constables was progressing towards the final pre-training stage.
He said preparations were underway for comprehensive training based on an improved curriculum and international best practices as part of efforts to strengthen the capacity and professionalism of the Force.
Beyond security operations, Disu stressed the importance of community engagement in addressing insecurity. He said the police had strengthened engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders, noting that public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence remained critical to achieving sustainable security.
The IGP further reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to lawful and professional investigations, civilian protection, human rights and due process.
He said the Force would continue contributing to Nigeria’s broader counterterrorism and criminal justice framework while supporting the objectives of the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group.
Disu reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to sustaining its contribution to the roadmap through professional policing, community protection, stronger investigative capacity and support for Nigeria’s wider security and rule-of-law objectives.
The meeting is part of ongoing engagement between Nigeria and the United States on security, religious freedom, counterterrorism and law enforcement cooperation.
