Radiologists Take National Conference to Northeast Nigeria

By Abubakar Mohammed, Maiduguri

The Association of Radiologists in Nigeria (ARIN) has taken its 9th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference to Maiduguri for the first time, highlighting growing attention to diagnostic and interventional radiology in the Northeast.

The five-day conference, which runs from August 17 to 21, 2026, is being held at the Zulum Auditorium of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital under the theme, “Advancing Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology in Resource-Limited Settings.”

The conference brings together radiologists, healthcare professionals, researchers and other stakeholders to deliberate on developments in diagnostic and interventional radiology, with particular attention to the challenges of delivering advanced medical services in resource-limited environments.

Speaking during a courtesy engagement with Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, the President of the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria, Dr. Ebby Robinson, commended the state government for its investment and commitment to healthcare delivery.

Dr. Robinson said; “radiologists play a critical role in modern medicine by providing the imaging and diagnostic information required for accurate treatment decisions.”

He said; “advancements in radiology had transformed medical practice, particularly through interventional radiology, which allows doctors to treat certain conditions using minimally invasive procedures instead of conventional open surgery.”

Appeal for support
The ARIN President appealed to the Borno State Government to sustain its support for healthcare professionals and continue investing in modern medical infrastructure and technology.

Responding, Governor Zulum commended ARIN for choosing Maiduguri as the venue for its annual conference, describing the decision as “an indication of growing confidence in the state.”

Govenror Zulum explained that his administration was developing a State University Teaching Hospital, saying “construction had reached an advanced stage and was expected to be completed within the coming months.”

He said the state government’s investment in healthcare was not limited to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital but extended to healthcare facilities and services across the state.

Medical technology
The Governor also highlighted the importance of modern medical technology, particularly innovations in interventional radiology that enable physicians to perform procedures with minimal invasion.

He explained that advances in medical technology now make it possible to treat certain blockages in arteries and veins without resorting to conventional surgery.
