The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) is set to convene maritime industry stakeholders at its 2026 Maritime Training Summit in Lagos, with focus on innovation, technology and skills development to strengthen the nation’s Maritime workforce.
The one-day summit, scheduled for September 4th in Lagos, has the theme, “The Power of Innovation in a Future-Ready Maritime Training Agenda.”
The Association said; “the summit would provide a platform for stakeholders to examine how innovation, technology and continuous professional development could help address skills gaps and build a workforce capable of supporting the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy.”
It said Nigeria’s coastal location provides significant access to global maritime trade routes and marine resources, but noted that geography alone could not translate into economic prosperity without a competent, skilled and technology-driven workforce.
The Association also said “investment in maritime training, retraining and continuous capacity development was essential to developing indigenous manpower and improving Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global maritime economy.”
A major feature of the summit will be a presentation by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on “An Overview of Customs Journey for National Economic Security Using Cutting-Edge Innovations.”
The association said the presentation would highlight technological and operational reforms in the Nigeria Customs Service and their implications for trade facilitation and economic security.
Other issues expected to feature at the summit include artificial intelligence and automation in maritime operations, digitalisation of ports and customs processes, maritime safety and security, workforce reskilling and upskilling, indigenous manpower development and innovation in maritime education.
Participants are also expected to examine ways of strengthening maritime training institutions and aligning curricula with the changing demands of shipping, port operations, logistics, customs administration, offshore activities and other emerging areas of the blue economy.
AMJON President, Vera Osokpo, said; “the summit was conceived to contribute to the national conversation on how Nigeria could harness innovation and human capital to unlock greater value from its maritime resources.”
