The Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced a fresh intervention to restore basic services and strengthen local administration in Mallam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, following the gradual return of residents displaced by insurgency.
He made the announcement during a visit to the border community, where he inspected facilities damaged by years of conflict and held discussions with residents on challenges associated with their resettlement.
The facilities inspected included schools, government structures and residential buildings that were damaged or abandoned during the insurgency.
The Governor subsequently directed the immediate provision of key social infrastructure, including an Islamiyya school, primary and secondary schools, as well as a hospital.
Zulum said reconstructing public facilities was necessary to make the community habitable and give returning families the confidence to rebuild their lives.
According to the Governor, access to education, healthcare and other essential services would enable residents to restore their livelihoods and provide better opportunities for their children.
The visit also provided residents with an opportunity to raise concerns directly with the state government, particularly issues affecting their return and the restoration of normal community life.
Zulum later visited the 68 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Mallam-Fatori, where he met the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel D. Y. Chuwar, officers and troops serving in the area.
He commended the soldiers for their efforts to protect the community and support the restoration of civilian activities after years of insecurity.
The Governor pledged continued support from the state government to address the essential needs of the troops and strengthen their capacity to perform their duties.
Another major decision announced during the visit concerned traditional administration in the community.
Zulum directed the suspension of all existing village and ward heads in Mallam-Fatori and ordered immediate arrangements for the appointment of new traditional representatives.
The Governor said the absence of the traditional leaders during his visit was unacceptable, particularly at a time when displaced residents were returning and communities needed effective leadership.
He noted that traditional institutions had an important role in maintaining communication between residents and government, promoting stability and supporting communities emerging from conflict to rebuild.
Zulum therefore directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Hon. Sugun Mai Mele, to liaise with the Shehu of Borno on the appointment of new village and ward heads.
According to him, those selected must demonstrate integrity, competence and commitment, as well as the ability to work effectively with residents, government authorities and security agencies.
