A Chinese national has been rescued alive from a tunnel in Nepal, 10 days after a massive wall of ice, rocks and mud swept through a Himalayan valley, killing more than 1,300 people and leaving thousands missing.
The Nepali Army said the survivor, identified only as Luhaitao, was rescued on Saturday from a 225-metre tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project.
Rescue teams recovered the man alive from inside the tunnel after days of search operations following the disaster.
The incident occurred in the Himalayan region, where the torrent of ice, rocks and mud caused widespread destruction and trapped people in tunnels and other structures.
Authorities said more than 5,600 people remain missing, while the death toll has risen above 1,300, making the incident one of the country’s deadliest recent disasters.
The rescue operation continued despite difficult terrain and challenging conditions as emergency workers searched areas affected by the massive flow.
On Friday, rescuers also pulled two people alive from another tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station, located along the same river.
The latest rescues have raised hopes that more survivors could still be found as emergency teams continue their search operations.
Authorities have yet to provide further details on Luhaitao’s condition or how he survived inside the tunnel for 10 days.
