Tanzania President’s Husband Dies in Zanzibar

The husband of Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, announced his death on Monday and expressed condolences to the President and the family.

Hassan, who had been receiving treatment for a heart condition, became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed office as the country’s first female president following the death of President John Magufuli.

The couple had four children, three sons and a daughter, who is a lawmaker.

Ndejembi said arrangements were underway for Hassan’s burial in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous archipelago that forms part of Tanzania.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed condolences to President Hassan and the Tanzanian people, describing the deceased as a lifelong companion to the President and a beloved father.

Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also conveyed his condolences to President Hassan and the people of Tanzania.
