South Sudan’s government has vowed to foil anti-government protests called for by a group of activists on Monday.

The group calling itself The People’s Coalition for Civil Action wants the president and his first vice-president to step down.

They accuse President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar of frustrating the people of South Sudan.

Some members of the group who were arrested in August after calling for an uprising are still in jail in the capital Juba.

Juba Mayor Kalisto Lado Faustino says his administration will restrict any gathering of two or more people in the city on Monday.

Mr Lado described the group calling for the protests as “people who are against the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement”.

The president’s press secretary, Ateny Wek Ateny, said those who are calling for Mr Kiir and Mr Machar to step down want “chaos” in South Sudan and for the country to “slide back to war“, Al-Watan Arabic daily newspaper reports.
