The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, attached to the Headquarters of 3 Division, Jos, Plateau State.
The Army stressed that no conclusion on the culpability of any individual can be reached until the investigative process is completed.
It said the allegation, which is circulating online, is being treated with utmost seriousness, particularly given the reported involvement of a vulnerable person.
A statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Olukoya, stated that “appropriate steps have been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the matter.”
He said that the Army has emphasised that the ongoing investigation requires due process and fairness, with the rights and dignity of all parties to be protected while the facts are established.

According to him, the Army also acknowledged that relevant civil authorities are examining the matter and stated that it will cooperate fully with them to ensure that the allegation is investigated thoroughly and transparently in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Accountability and Respect
The position places the matter within the Army’s wider disciplinary framework, which places emphasis on professionalism, accountability and respect for human dignity.
Olukoya said that any personnel found, after investigation, to have acted contrary to the law or established service regulations will face appropriate action.
He said urged members of the public to refrain from speculation, spreading unverified information or taking actions capable of prejudicing the investigation.
“Particular caution was urged regarding the privacy and wellbeing of any minor or other vulnerable person connected to the matter,” he stated.
