Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making education a top priority, describing investment in the sector as essential to human capital development and sustainable growth.
Governor Yusuf spoke at the second and third combined convocation ceremony of Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano State, where 1,101 students were conferred with various degrees.
The governor said the priority his administration attaches to education was reflected in the state’s 2026 budget, with the sector receiving the largest allocation.
He commended Al-Istiqama University for contributing to the expansion of higher education and creating opportunities for young people to acquire knowledge and develop skills.

Yusuf also described the relationship between the Kano State Government and the university as cordial, assuring the institution of continued government support and collaboration in advancing education in the state.
He congratulated the graduating students and urged them to remain committed to lifelong learning and personal development.
The governor encouraged the graduates to utilise the knowledge and values acquired during their studies to contribute positively to their communities and the wider society.
The founder and proprietor of the university, Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, said the institution was established to provide accessible, quality and faith-based education while promoting academic excellence and good character.
He commended the university’s staff, students, stakeholders and supporters for their contributions to its growth since its establishment.
As part of the convocation, three Kano-born personalities: Alhaji Abdulmumini Maishanu, popularly known as A.Y. Shafa, Malam Ibrahim Khalil and the late Alhaji Aminu Dantata-were honoured with honorary doctorate degrees.
The recipients were recognised for their contributions and achievements in society, with Dantata receiving the award posthumously.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Istiqama University, Prof. Abdulhadi Sule-Kumurya, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing quality education and producing graduates equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.
Kumurya congratulated the graduands and urged them to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies to the development of their communities and Nigeria.
