The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Correspondents Chapel, has commenced a two-day capacity-building workshop to prepare journalists for accurate, responsible and professional coverage of the 2027 general elections.
The workshop, held in Katsina, brought together journalists from print and broadcast media, government officials, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders to examine emerging challenges in election reporting and democratic governance.
Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Yusuf Jargaba, disclosed that the training was designed to strengthen journalists’ knowledge and skills in reporting electoral processes, particularly in the digital media environment.

He said credible election reporting was essential to ensuring that citizens received accurate information and were better informed about electoral processes.
The Katsina State NUJ Chairman, Aminu Dandagoro, urged journalists to adhere to professional ethics, accuracy, fairness and objectivity in their coverage of the 2027 elections.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr Bala Salisu Zango, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Tukur Danali, stressed the importance of responsible journalism to democratic governance and urged participants to apply the knowledge gained.
The Director-General of Media to the Governor, Maiwada Dan Malam, called for stronger collaboration between the media and electoral stakeholders to ensure Nigerians have access to credible and accurate information during the elections.
He also highlighted the importance of journalists’ financial independence in enabling them to perform their professional responsibilities effectively.
INEC representative Aliyu Adosa Garba, Dr Kabir Umar Musa of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University and Dr Aminu Sa’idu Ado were among the resource persons.
Presentations at the workshop focused on Media and Electoral Accountability, Journalism, Elections and Democratic Governance in the Digital Age, and Journalist Safety During Elections: Risk Assessment, Conflict Reporting and Field Protection.
The workshop also provided journalists with an opportunity to discuss fact-based election reporting, digital misinformation, conflict-sensitive coverage and safety challenges that may arise during the 2027 general elections.
