South Korea and Egypt have upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has said.
Lee made this known on Thursday in Seoul while delivering opening remarks ahead of a summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
The two leaders also witnessed the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering shipbuilding, clean energy, power infrastructure and technology.
Lee said South Korea hoped the two countries would begin negotiations towards implementing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to further strengthen trade and investment.

The South Korean president also said the two countries would expand defence cooperation, describing the joint production of K9 self-propelled howitzers as a success.
He added that he had explained South Korea’s principle of peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula to President Sisi.
The Egyptian president’s visit follows a summit between the two leaders in Cairo in 2025.
The latest meeting is expected to further deepen cooperation between South Korea and Egypt in economic, energy, defence and technological sectors.
