NYSC Approves Increased Feeding Budget for Corps Members

By Ene Audu, Abuja

The Nigerian Government has approved an increase in the feeding budget for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members during their orientation course, as part of efforts to improve their welfare.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while interacting with 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream One corps members at the Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra, South-South Nigeria.

He said the Budget Office was aware of the upward review, stating that the increase was expected to take effect next year.

Nafiu urged corps members to spend wisely, avoid ostentatious lifestyles and cultivate the habit of saving.

He commended the resilience and determination of Nigerian youths in undertaking national service.

The Director General also advised corps members to prioritise their safety while travelling, urging them to stop their journeys before 6 pm and continue the following day where necessary.

“Don’t sleep in public places or at filling stations in large numbers, as people will easily identify you,” he warned.

He advised them to seek assistance from security agencies when necessary.

“Go to military barracks, police barracks, DSS establishments, and call the NYSC line,” he said.

Nafiu noted that efforts would be intensified to engage stakeholders in improving and renovating facilities at the Obubra Orientation Camp.

He also urged corps members to acquire practical skills that would enhance the value of their certificates and improve their future prospects.

“Learn something that will be useful to you. Learn cosmetology, learn how to tie gele and others,” he said.

Earlier, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, described the director-general’s visit as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of corps members.

She disclosed that 1,064 corps members had registered at the camp, adding that they had adapted to the regimented camp environment.
