Davidovich Fokina Wins Third Title After Years of Frustration

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina fought back from a set down to defeat compatriot Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, clinching the Shanghai Masters title and his third ATP Tour trophy.

The 27-year-old recovered from a difficult opening set to force a deciding set, completing a comeback victory against his fellow Spaniard.

The triumph continued an impressive run for Davidovich Fokina, who claimed his maiden ATP Tour title in Mallorca in June before adding another trophy in Chengdu last month.

Having made his ATP Tour debut in April 2019, the Spaniard endured a seven-year wait for his first title, losing five finals before his breakthrough.

His latest success means he has now won three titles in four months.

“I cannot describe with words what I achieved in this Chinese swing,” Davidovich Fokina said at a post-match press conference.

“I never thought I would have two titles after two months out. But I’m really, really happy. I think my team (were) pushing me. It was difficult when I was at home, and they were pushing me very hard.

“They knew that I can achieve these kind of things. So I am very grateful for what they have done, because they were believing in me.”

Davidovich Fokina’s resurgence followed a two-month absence caused by a back injury.

He returned to competitive action in Chengdu, where he won the title in his first tournament back.

His performances have also boosted his position in the ATP rankings, taking him from world number 26 to a career-high 13.

The Shanghai victory further underlined his return to form following the injury setback.
