PDP Reaffirms Commitment to Party Constitution

Chika Eze, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the party’s constitution and established procedures, assuring members that no aspect of its internal democratic processes will be disregarded ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Chairman of the party, Abdulrahman Mohammed, gave the assurance during a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) with the Forum of State Chairmen in Abuja.

Mohammed said the party would continue to conduct its meetings and other activities in accordance with its constitution and established guidelines, including meetings of the party’s caucus and expanded national meetings.

“No single process will be omitted under the leadership of this National Working Committee, including that of caucus and the expanded national meeting of our great party,” he emphasised.

The PDP chairman commended state chairmen for ensuring the successful nomination of candidates for the State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and governorship elections across the 36 states.

He expressed optimism that the party’s candidates would emerge victorious in the 2027 general elections, assuring members that the NWC was committed to providing the leadership needed to achieve electoral success.

Mohammed said the outcome of the 2027 elections should mark a new beginning for the party and contribute to national progress.

He also appreciated members of the NWC for their support, cooperation and advice, assuring them that the leadership would work collectively to strengthen the party.

Earlier, the Chairman of the PDP Forum of State Chairmen, Austin Nwachukwu, congratulated the NWC on its performance since assuming office and reaffirmed the commitment of state chairmen to working with the national leadership.

Nwachukwu said the presence of the state chairmen at the meeting demonstrated their commitment and responsiveness to the party’s leadership.

He pledged that state structures would work towards securing the PDP’s victory in the forthcoming elections, describing state chairmen as the party’s foot soldiers at the grassroots.

“We are ready to partner with our National Working Committee in any aspect of endeavour that would come up and that wants us to play a critical role. Being their soldiers in the states, we would do the needful to follow them in any way they want us to work,” the Chairman of the PDP Forum of State Chairmen stated.

However, Nwachukwu raised concerns over alleged intimidation, harassment and attacks against PDP candidates in some states, particularly those where the party was not in control of the government.

He cited Ebonyi State, alleging that opposition candidates had been subjected to intimidation, harassment, arrests and killings under the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru.

The forum chairman disclosed that the state chairmen had recently visited Ebonyi to address what he described as disturbing developments affecting the party and its candidates.

Nwachukwu said the forum had prepared a petition to the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies, seeking urgent intervention to protect PDP candidates and members.

He warned that the forum would no longer tolerate attacks or intimidation against its candidates because of their participation in the electoral process.

“The killings and harassment of our candidates and governorship candidates, especially in various states of the country, must stop,” he said.

“The forum will not take it lightly anymore if any of our candidates are harassed, intimidated or killed because of mere elections. It’s a contest. A winner must emerge,” Nwachukwu stressed.

He called on security agencies to ensure the safety of all political actors and guarantee a peaceful and fair electoral environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the national leadership and state chairmen to reaffirm their commitment to party unity, internal cohesion and effective collaboration towards strengthening the PDP ahead of the polls.
