The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Education Secretariat has reiterated the commitment to the safety of schools and students across the territory.
The Acting Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Mr Leramoh Abdulrazeez stated this in Abuja Nigeria’s capital after meeting with major stakeholders in the Education sector.
Abdulrazeez said it was imperative to again allay the fears of parents, guardians and stakeholders of the safety of their wards in schools operating within the FCT following alleged reports of hundreds of bandits entering border towns of the FCT in trucks as well as the closure of schools.
He said, contrary to the reports, no school has been closed as the Administration has beefed up security around all schools in the FCT.
The Acting Secretary further explained that only Veritas University was not in session as the school is currently on mid-term break sparking fear from residents that it might have been closed as a result of the development.
“Particularly Base University are currently on break now and authorities of these schools are taken measures to ensure that their schools are adequately secured before they resumed.
“On the issue of tertiary institutions as regards to security, the Department of Security has created a forum by which all Heads of Tertiary institutions meet regularly but now we will make it monthly to ensure adequate strategies, particularly with reference to security in our tertiary institutions, is addressed adequately,“ he said.
He added that “The police, Department of State Security Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Air force, and even the Army, as we speak, are all around schools in sessions to ensure adequate security is given. “
While speaking on measures taken by the Administration to ensure the safety of residents and students, the FCT Director, Security Services, Adamu Gwary said the Inspector General of Police has commenced deployment of security personnel to all flash points bordering the FCT.
Earlier, residents of the Bwari Area Council of the FCT expressed concerns over the development as they appealed to the administration to provide adequate security to the Area Council to enable residents to go about their daily activities without fear.
They said they have been in apprehension after reports that over 200 unidentified men suspected to be bandits were dropped by a truck in the Sabon Wuse area of Niger State, a border town with Bwari, FCT.
