Stakeholders in Nigeria have called for the promotion of peaceful coexistence in the country.
They made the call during the public presentation of the Book titled “The Wind Of Peace,” by a peace advocate, Mr Ekerette Umana in Abuja the nation’s capital.
According to the author, the book is an intellectual approach to tackling insecurity and other forms of vices that are militating against a peaceful nation because it serves as material for peace sensitization and national development.
He explained that the book examines the causes of insecurity and instability as well as the role of citizens in ensuring peace and nation-building.
Mr Umana commended the Nigerian government’s efforts in addressing some forms of insecurity in the country.
“Significantly the federal government led by President Muhammad Buhari, the security agencies, the civil societies, Diplomatic Communities, stakeholders including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the academia among others have contributed to Sustaining the culture of peace in the nation against the tides.”
He promised to make available copies of the book to schools, ministries, Agencies, Embassies, Research Institutes, Libraries and stakeholders as a commitment to enhancing peace and civic education.
“We hope that this effort will add up to similar or related interventions made by government, organizations, and other citizens in this regard.”
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya who was represented by Major General Mohammed Augie said the book was a positive step in the right direction towards achieving a peaceful Nigeria
He explained that the content of the book would go a long way in showing the contributions of the Nigerian Army especially those on the field.
Also, the Vice President Akwa-Ibom community in Abuja, Mr Gabriel Fan stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence in nation-building.
He, therefore, urged citizens to tolerate one another, promote peace and unity for the growth of the country.
Peace Education
A Nigerian Professor Udenta Udenta for his part called for the inclusion of peace education in schools as well as the establishment of a peace academy
While calling for the establishment of peace clubs in schools, he said peace is the foundation of development and a channel to greater prosperity of every nation.
He applauded the return of history subjects back to secondary school classes to educate young Nigerians about what he described as past struggles and chart a way for a better future.
Other stakeholders who spoke at the book presentation stressed the importance of peace for nation-building.
