Rivers United Prepares For West African Challenge Cup

Rivers United Football Club of Port Harcourt departed for Benin Republic yesterday for the maiden edition of the West African Challenge Cup, a pre-season tournament organised by Aubay Sports and Monange Promotions.

The championship, which features top west and central Africa’s clubs, began on August 19 in Benin Republic. It is a round-robin competition that will see the winner crowned champion of champions.

According to Rivers United’s Media Officer, Charles Mayuku, the club is still working to ensure it joins other teams for the tournament this week in Benin Republic.

“This championship is organised to unite football teams and also open up possibilities for clubs and players involved in the competition,” Mayuku said.

“Rivers United is scheduled to play their first game on Wednesday (today) and the management is working round the clock to ensure we achieve success at the tournament.”

The nine teams listed for the one-week championship are Hearts of Oak (Ghana), Union Sportive de la Gendarmerie Nationale (Niger), Horoya Athletic Club (Guinea), Arta Solar 7 (Djibouti), Loto-Popo FC (Benin), AS Vita Club (Congo), AS Sonabel FC (Burkina Faso), Les Buffles (Benin) and Rivers United FC (Nigeria).
