For the first time in African football history, the continent will be represented by 10 nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The milestone was finalized on Tuesday night following a dramatic intercontinental playoff, confirming that Africa will take full advantage of the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) secured the historic tenth slot, defeating Jamaica 1-0 in a tense, extra-time thriller in Mexico. This victory ends a 52-year drought for the Leopards, who last appeared on the world stage in 1974.

Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cape Verde and South Africa had already secured qualification before DR Congo completed the line-up.
While nine teams earned direct tickets by topping their qualification groups, DR Congo took the scenic route through the intercontinental playoffs to complete the lineup.
