President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured the Nigeria Police Force of continued support to enable it effectively secure the 2027 General Elections and protect Nigerians exercising their democratic rights.
The President gave the assurance in an address delivered on his behalf By the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume at the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State.
President Tinubu said the Conference with the theme, “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Election,” was timely as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections.
He stressed that ensuring citizens can participate in the democratic process in an atmosphere of peace, security and confidence must remain a priority.
The President said electoral security went beyond protecting ballot papers and polling stations, noting that “it also involved protecting citizens, electoral officials and materials, preventing violence and intimidation, and creating a safe environment for political parties and candidates to campaign.”
“The 2027 General Elections will therefore require careful preparation, professionalism, impartiality, intelligence-led operations and close coordination among all security and electoral stakeholders,” the President said.
He assured the Police that the Nigerian Government would provide the necessary support to enable the Force discharge its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
President Tinubu said his administration remained committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and would continue to support initiatives aimed at improving the operational capacity, professionalism, welfare and institutional effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
The President commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, and the leadership of the Force for their efforts to reposition the Police and respond to the changing nature of crime and insecurity.
He also recognised the sacrifices of police officers confronting kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, banditry, cultism, violent crime and other forms of criminality across the country.
President Tinubu, however, said “more needed to be done to meet the security expectations of Nigerians.”
He tasked the Police with strengthening intelligence gathering, improving response times, deepening community engagement, embracing technology and enhancing cooperation with other security agencies.
President Tinubu said; “Criminal networks are becoming more sophisticated, and our policing methods must therefore remain equally adaptive.”
