Humanitarian Ministry flags off Campaign against open defecation in IDP Camps

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development (FMHDSD) in collaboration with North East Development Commission (NEDC) has flagged off a sensitisation campaign on the effect of open defecation especially among the IDPs.

 

The Minister of Humanitarian affairs Hajjiya Sadiya Umar Farouk said the aim of the campaign was to educate the IDPs on the health hazards of open defecation and to see the possibility of providing a disposable latrine,  borehole and other facilities of social life in the camps.

 

She said open defecation can cause serious illness among the IDPs, mostly communicable diseases.

 

“The campaign is being flagged off here at the Bakasi camp in Maiduguri and a similar campaign will also commence in Adamawa and Markudi,” he said.

 

The Minister of Humanitarian affairs Hajjiya Sadiya Umar Farouk was represented by Mr. Akin Alesinloye.

 

Aliyu Ado, who also represented the MD North East Development Commission, said the Commission deem it fit to support the campaign in line with federal government directives to end open defecation in the 2025.

 

The representative of Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Hamza Umar commended the ministry’s effort for the campaign and urged the IDPs to adhere to the campaign for a healthier environment.
