Commission Moves to intensify Telecom Service Quality

By Chika Eze Lagos

The Nigerian Communications Commission has pledged to intensify efforts to improve telecommunications service quality across Nigeria, following more than 6,500 network interventions recorded in 2026.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, gave the assurance on Tuesday at the 95th edition of the Telecom Consumer Parliament held in Lagos, amid persistent complaints about dropped calls, slow internet speeds and unreliable services.

Maida explained that “75 million subscribers had received airtime compensation for poor network service, while nearly three million others had been refunded for failed airtime and data transactions.”

He said the Commission was prioritising lasting improvements in network performance, saying “financial compensation could not reverse the effects of missed business opportunities or failed communications.”

Speaking on the theme, “Enhancing Consumer Experience: Strengthening Service Quality and Consumer Protection in Nigeria’s Digital Economy,” Maida said the Commission would continue to hold operators accountable and ensure that affected subscribers received appropriate remedies.

He said; “The commission is also developing usage notification guidelines to give subscribers clearer information about data consumption and balances, while working with financial institutions and operators to speed up refunds for failed transactions.”

Maida identified fibre-optic cable cuts, equipment theft and other forms of infrastructure vandalism as major threats to network reliability, saying “the Commission was collaborating with relevant authorities to strengthen infrastructure protection.”

He also announced plans to expand Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System to help prevent fraud involving recycled phone numbers.

The Commission called on consumers to report unresolved complaints through its toll-free line, 622, after first contacting their service providers.

Maida said the NCC would continue using consumer feedback and data analysis to hold operators accountable and improve customer experience across the telecommunications sector.

He called on operators to provide clear answers to issues raised at the forum and honour their commitments, assuring consumers that the Commission would follow up on the concerns presented.

The forum brought together representatives of mobile network operators, internet service providers, consumer advocacy groups, youths and regulatory agencies to discuss ways of enhancing consumer experience and protection in Nigeria’s digital economy.
