Gender-based Violence: Unionist advocates stiffer penalty for rapists

A Unionist, Comrade Asmau Apalando, has advocated the castration of rapists to serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of the dastardly act in the society.

Comrade Apalando who is the Chairperson of the Women Wing of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Kwara State said this while speaking at this year’s International Women Day with the theme “Choose to Challenge” organized by a foremost unionist, Comrade Issa Aremu, at the press centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

She lamented that women are suffering from gender-based violence, sexual molestations, and harassment. The labour leader urged the women folks to rise to the challenges and fight against all forms of sexual assaults.

Comrade Apalando noted that there are cases of father raping daughters, old men having canal knowledge of teenagers, emphasizing the need for the victims to be voicing out and warned against stigmatization.

The unionist who also frowned at rampant cases of maltreatment of housewives in the society said girl child must be well taken care of, while the media should champion the campaign against gender-based violence.

Also speaking, the Representative of the National Council of Women Society, Madam Ann Omoyeni, urged women to stand up and fight for their rights in society.
