The Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has facilitated the enrolment of 800 out of schoolgirls into the Federal Government Girls College, Monguno, before approving full scholarship.
The 800 vulnerable girls are drawn from 16 local government areas of the state, which mostly high risk communities, where access to education have been denied by the ongoing insurgency.
A statement by the Borno State Government said the girls were at a ceremony formally welcomed to the FGGC Monguno, which is presently operating from Maiduguri.
Governor Zulum, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of Borno State Education Trust Fund, Malam Maina Yaumi, called on the students to be dedicated, committed and law abiding, while urging them to study hard, because the government was ready to cover all their bills until graduation.
Malam Yaumi said the Governor has approved the total sum of 79 million naira for school fees, uniforms, books, mattresses, bags, sandals and other daily needs for the first term and that in a few weeks’ time, another sum of 80.2 million naira would be paid to the school to cover their second and third-term tuition fees.
He further gave the assurance that Governor Zulum was committed to increasing access to school and uplift the standard of education in the state.
The Principal of the School, Mrs. Aisha Umar Isa Sa’eed, appreciated the efforts of Governor Zulum and thanked him for providing them with one of the Mega Schools within Maiduguri as their temporary site.
Also, while in the school, the representative of the Governor commissioned the school library, which was furnished by the Old Girls Association of the School.
