Agency Partners With Technology Group To Deepen Nigeria’s Digital Literacy

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is partnering with a Nigerian Technology Startup company, UNICCON Group, to drive digital literacy in the country.
According to NITDA, it would leverage the Company’s homegrown innovation “Omeife“, a humanoid robot which has software features as a Service (OaaS).This OaaS will strongly impact and deepen the ability of Nigerians to use IT and digital technology.
Omeife is a human-like robot skilled in language, movement, navigation, and behavioural intelligence using artificial intelligence and computer vision capabilities.
Speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Director General of NITDA, Mr Kashifu Inuwa represented by the National Director, National Center for Artificial Intelligence Robotics, Yau Garba, said that the relationship is to assist NITDA and the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in achieving the vision of achieving 95% digital literacy rate in Nigeria by 2030.
He said, “We are thrilled this is coming from homegrown engineers. We believe this would help deepen the digital literacy campaign of NITDA and, by extension, the Ministry. The whole idea of the collaboration is how to leverage Omeife to improve digital literacy in Nigeria” He explained
According to Him , the plan is to use a robot called Omeife, just like ChatGPT. “You can talk to it and ask for guidance.The robot could be controlled using any of the four languages in Nigeria
“The good thing is that we are leveraging four languages that are majorly spoken in Nigeria. We are talking of pidgin, Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. We want to show that there is absolute inclusion. No Nigerian would be left behind. We plan to have applications any Nigeria can” He affirmed
Speaking during the ceremony, the chairman of UNICCON Group, Dr. Chuks Ekwueme expressed his gratitude to the DG of NITDA for encouraging local technology content development in Nigeria.
He further commended the agency for its vision to achieve 95% digital literacy rate in Nigeria by 2030, which is currently the highest target as compared to other African countries.
Mr.Ekwueme revealed that the technological framework (Omeife) that will be deployed to achieve this goal has been designed and customized by Africans, and for Africans, to aid effectiveness, unlike other forms of imported technology that tend to lack adequate consideration of Africans in their development and deployment.
“Omeife as a Service (OaaS)will make learning easier when integrated with the Agency’s Learning Management System (LMS)”
General Manager of UNICCON Group, Kehinde Ake appreciated the Ministry, Agency and subsidiaries for the opportunities granted to the company to be partners in progress.
He gave the assurance of the company’s preparedness to deliver on the tasks with the agency’s support.
The duo of the Head of Legal Services, NITDA Emmanuel Edet and Dr. Chuks Ekwueme signed the MoU on behalf of NITDA and UNICCON Group, respectively.
Also, in attendance at the event were: Mrs. Umar Hadiza Director Head Corporate Affairs and External Relations ,Mrs. Iklima Musa, Special Assistant to the Director General, NITDA on Innovation and Strategy, UNICCON Group had, Chief technology Officer, Victor Uno Head of Digital Media, Promise Mbani (Legal Secretary) among others.
