APC adopts direct primary for Kogi State governorship

The governing party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress, APC has adopted the direct mode of primaries to select its governorship candidate for the Kogi State governorship election scheduled to hold in November this year.

This is contained in a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission by the APC Acting National Chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

The APC informed the electoral commission of its decision to use the direct mode of primaries and maintained that the primary will hold on the 14th of April.

The letter reads in part: “We refer to our earlier letter dated 25th January, 2023, with reference no: APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/023/191 wherein we notified the Commission of the mode of primary election for the conduct of the Gubernatorial Primary Election in Kogi State.

“However, our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reviewed the modalities for the conduct of the Gubernatorial Primary Election in Kogi State and has therefore resorted to adopt the DIRECT mode of primary election instead of the Indirect Mode as earlier communicated.

“The date for the conduct of the primary election still remains Friday 14th April, 2023.

“Following the above, there shall be a Special Congress to ratify the candidate with the highest number of votes at the Gubernatorial Primary Election in Kogi State scheduled for Saturday, 15th April, 2023.”

Some of the aspirants contesting in the race for the APC Kogi governorship ticket are; The Deputy Governor, Edward Onoja; Kogi West Senator, Smart Adeyemi, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Abdulkareem Asuku, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka; and son of a former governor of the state, Prince Shauibu Abubakar Audu.

Others contesting for the ticket are; Former Executive Director, Rural Electrification Agency, Sanusi Ohiare; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Salami Momodu O. Deedat and Usman Ododo, Auditor General, Local Government, the Chairman Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Crime, Senator Oseni Yakubu, Halima l. Alfa, Momoh Jibrin, Alh. Yusuf Yakubu Okala, Hon. Asiru Idris, Prof. Stephen Ikani Ocheni, Abubakar Yahaya Achimugu, Idachaba Friday and David A. Jimoh.
