The Chairman Kwara State Traditional Council of Chiefs and Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari has commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for constituting the Board and management of Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission,(HYPPADEC) and ensuring its full take off.
According to the monarch, the commission, as part of its functions if well funded will bring an end to the perennial flooding affecting communities living on river banks.
Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari made these observations while receiving the board and management team of the Commission who paid him a courtesy visit in his palace in Ilorin.
He lamented that every year, the Communities residing in the riverbank areas have their farm produce and other valuables washed away by floods.
According to him, the annual flood occurrence was a result of the release of water from the Hydro Power stations which always cause colossal damages to farmlands and residential buildings in the affected communities.
Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, therefore, urged the Commission to work hard and resolve the problem once and for all.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Governing council of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission,(HYPPADEC), Mr. Joseph Terfa Ityav said the Commission will ensure the physical development of the host areas.
He said the management team had commenced visits to the affected areas to see things for themselves.
Mr. Joseph Terfa maintained that the commission will also tackle the ecological menace in the host Communities among others.
“One of the key functions of the commission is to tackle ecological menace being experienced by the people of the communities located around Hydro Power stations,” he added.
The team later visited flood-prone communities in Jebba, Moro local government area of the state for on the spot assessment.
